DISSONA

DISSONA is met today as a mature national retail label. Its own history places a decade of Shenzhen workshop production before the brand name existed — and gives three different founding dates.

The Shenzhen workshop hidden inside a polished brand

DISSONA’s official history starts in a small Shenzhen workshop. The company says it was established in Nanshan District in 1985 and that the early operation was “only a small handicraft workshop.” The DISSONA brand, according to the same timeline, arrived in the middle of the 1990s.

That distinction matters. DISSONA is often encountered today as a mature Chinese leather-goods company with polished stores, footwear, seasonal collections and a vocabulary of metropolitan elegance. Its own history places a decade of workshop production before the named brand.

The official page also contains a contradiction. Its introductory text says “from its establishment in 1990,” while the chronology immediately below gives 1985 for the company and the mid-1990s for the brand. MEI has kept all three formulations visible. A company beginning, a later commercial transition and the creation of the DISSONA name could account for the sequence, though the site does not explain it.

The history becomes clearer from 2011. DISSONA says it repositioned as a premium leather-goods brand that year and added women’s shoes. In November it commissioned architecture practice Diller Scofidio + Renfro to design a 50,000-square-metre creative industrial park in Dongguan. By 2018, the company says it had more than 370 stores and had been recognised as a benchmark enterprise in China’s leather-goods industry.

This is an origin story about industrial maturation. DISSONA did not emerge during the recent wave of social-commerce bag brands. Its roots lie in Shenzhen’s manufacturing economy, with design, branding and retail added over time. The current official description still begins with research and manufacturing of “Chinese premium leather goods.”

That history gives DISSONA a useful role in Issue 001. Songmont, 裘真 and Amazing Song can be narrated through named founders and distinctive first products. DISSONA shows the longer institutional path by which a workshop becomes a national retail label — a counterpoint to the founder-led stories, even though the absence of a founder narrative makes the profile less intimate.

The missing founder is the central reporting gap. Public company-record snippets associate Zhou Lijing, 周丽静, with related entities, and the current site copyright names 德津实业发展(深圳)有限公司. The official history does not identify a founder, and MEI will not assign that role through inference.

On the date: The official site contradicts itself: its chronology gives 1985 for the company and the mid-1990s for the DISSONA brand, while its introductory text says "from its establishment in 1990". MEI keeps all three visible rather than choosing one.

Reported — awaiting brand fact-check
  • The official site itself supplies three time markers: 1985, 1990 and the mid-1990s. Company and trademark records are required to establish the sequence.
  • A 2017 design-industry report names Zhou Lijing 周丽静 as DISSONA group president and founder, which is the strongest identification found. The official history page still names no founder, so this rests on one secondary source.
  • The legal relationship between DISSONA, 德津实业发展(深圳)有限公司 and Shenzhen DISSONA Leather Goods requires registry confirmation.
  • Store count, industry recognition and international-designer collaborations are first-party claims.
  • Older promotional pages repeat an Italian-origin narrative that does not appear in the current official Chinese history. MEI found no primary evidence for it and has excluded that account.
